Session #101 · 1989–91

Speech #1010072489

Mr. Speaker. the growing volume of Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union is very encouraging. by the Soviets have historirally skewed the system to discourage the newly free from going to Israel. Fortythree of our colleagues have joined Rep. John Porter and me In writing to General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev urging him to provide greater freedom of choice for emigratIng Soviet Jews. It is not our place to tell the new emigrants where they must go. That Is a decision for them to make. But they have not had the freedom to decide because for decades the Soviet Union has painted for its citizens a picture of a dangerous. cruel and Inhospitable Israel.
