Mr. Speaker. H.R. 2712 would waive the 2year home country residency requirement for student nationals of the Peoples Republic of China who hold J visas. This bill will prohibit the Chinese Government from carrying out their ruthless plan of retribution against the prodemocracy students who would otherwise have to return home. I have been contacted by hundreds of Chinese students from my district and around the country who are terrified of the atrocities they may suffer as a result of their participation in prodemocracy demonstrations. They report that they have been videotaped and photographed at demonstrations and are rightfully concerned that they may be imprisoned or executed upon their return to China. It has unfortunately been reported that the repression in Beijing has continued. with reports of those who support democracy being brutually executed. I believe it is incumbent upon the Congress to ensure that current immigration policy does not allow the Chinese Government to arbitrarily execute or imprison people for believing in the freedom that we so reverently embrace. Mr. Speaker.
