Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000095149

Mr. Speaker. I worry that the Soviets may be up to their old tricks. Only the week before Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadzes meeting with Secretary George Shultz. several wellknown refuseniks were granted permission to emigrate. Dont get me wrong. Mr. Speaker. I am overjoyed that Vladimir Lifshitz. Josef Begun. and the others will finally receive the freedoms they rightfully deserve. But what about Roald Zelichonok. Benjamin Charny. Abe Stolar. and the 400.000 other Soviet Jews waiting to leave? We must never forget that this highprofile publicity venture is solely the result of hard work and tireless effort by the human rights community of the West to make the plight of these people known.
