Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000091463

Mr. Speaker. for the last 4 years. I have sponsored legislation which would temporarily suspend the deportations of Salvadoran and Nicaraguan refugees currently in the United States. On July 28. the House of Representatives passed my bill by a strong margin of 237181. The Senate is expected to consider a similar bill sponsored by Senator DENNIS DECONCINI of Arizona in the very near future. Mr. Speaker. I believe that Salvadoran and Nicaraguan refugees deserve temporary protection due to the violence and turmoil which has engulfed both countries. The Salvadoran and Nicaraguan refugees who have sought safety in the United States are not economic migrants. as some have contended. They are war refugees. They need our help. Holly Burkhalter. the Washington.
