Yakov Rabinovich. Mikhail Gorbachevs glasnost policies recently have been credited with an array of new reforms. Although the Soviet Union is rapidly progressing in many domestic aspects. the question of Soviet Jewry still remains unresolved. Unlike all citizens in our American democracy. Soviet Jewish refuseniks live with uncertainty. harassment. and intimidation. and they are treated brutally by the Soviet system. Their only crime is their desire to live as Jews and to emigrate to Israel. Gorbachev has been credited with the release of a number of Jews and political prisoners. Unfortunately. 400.000 known Jews still seek freedom from the Soviet Union.
