Mr. Speaker. today I rise in support of House Joint Resolution 132. a bill to designate April 24. 1988. as a "National Day of Remembrance for the Armenian Genocide of 19151923." April 24 is an important day for ArmenianAmericans. On this day in 1915. scores of Armenian political. religious. educational. and intellectural leaders were arrested and deported to Anatolia. Many of those taken from their homes were murdered by the Ottomans. Those who were not were driven out of the war zones and ordered to walk across the deserts of Syria and Mesopotamia to relocation centers. These forced marches caused countless Armenians to die en route.
