Not only has it spent the past 72 years countering over 100.000 Soviet troops in Afghanistan. but in recent weeks. it has been stunned by terrorist bombings. ethnic riots. and violence spilling over its borders from Iran. India. and Afghanistan. I have great sympathy for Pakistan. In the face of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Pakistan has been a staunch supporter of the Afghan freedom fighters. Pakistan has willingly harbored over 3 million Afghan refugees who fled from Soviet terror and destruction. Pakistan has been a staunch and invaluable ally of the United States. But the close and mutually supportive relations between the United States and Pakistan are being jeopardized by Islamabads drive to develop a nuclear capability.
