Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000081834

From time to time. the Senator from Ohio and I have found ourselves on the same sides of certain issues. while one or the other of us might not have always been aware of that when we found ourselves too closely allied. I have come to find that he can be an extraordinary ally to have on your -side. in some tough. hardfought battles. especially in conference committees. I remember particularly in a bankruptcy conference committee and especially in the immigration conference committee. where Senator METzENBAUM would give me great support and counsel and encouragement in difficult times. I found that having him on your side can also give you quite a different perspective when you are next lined up against him. You could see that no matter how maddening. intransigent and frustrating he may get. at least as I read it. on any particular issue. there is a certain appropriateness to the manner in which he carries out his side of the scrap. at least if one tries to view it from his side.
