I rise in strong support of H.R. 618. which provides for temporary stays of detention and deportation of illegal immigrants from El Salvador and Nicaragua while the General Accounting Office conducts a study on the conditions of displaced Salvadoran and Nicaraguan refugees. In addition. Mr. Chairman. I offer my sincerest thanks to the gentleman from Massachusetts for his tireless and diligent efforts to bring this critical issue before this House. The supporters of this measure are truly in his debt. Over 60.000 civilians have been killed in El Salvador since 1980 as a result of the Civil war.
