Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000080258

Chairman. let me say in conclusion. I think the issue here is the legislation before us. not the misconceptions that continue to plague us as to the conditions south of the border. I also want to leave no kind of question as to what my feelings are. because the Salvadorans in my area. illegal. undocumented. in the last 3 years have exceeded the number of undocumented citizens from Mexico. This is how serious the situation is. yet we have political prisoners. if you please. priests. ministers. welfare workers. in our jails. For what? For trying to do what we want to recognize now. give a helping hand. a charitable hand. a humanitarian hand. mostly to the Salvadoran immigrants that we have in our midst now. I repeat. only because of our policies. I say this legislation is a minimal requirement.
