We should not be selective in how we treat people who flee their homes to seek safety in the United States. Yet this administration has consistently denied temporary refuge to nationals of El Salvador while granting it under at least equally compelling circumstances to nationals of Poland. Ethiopia. Afghanistan. and Nicaragua. The legislation we are debating here today would correct that inequality by providing a temporary stay and I underscore "temporary stay" of deportation for nationals of El Salvador and Nicaragua. The relief provided under this measure is in the best humanitarian tradition of this country. I strongly urge your support.
