Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000078095

The Western States Trail Act of 1987 is intended. among other things. to give national recognition to two magnificent trails located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in northern California and Nevada. I am joined in this effort by seven of my colleagues. The first trail designation recognizes as a National Historic Trail. a 125mile stretch of the Westem States Trail which spans a distance of over 200 miles from Carson City. NV. to Sacramento. CA. This historic thoroughfare which stretches from points east to the Pacific follows practical routes used by American Indians and later early emigrants. miners. settlers and mail carriers. It was rediscovered by Sheriff Robert M. Watson and others in the early part of this century.
