Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000074667

It allows him to push forward on constructing a nuclear power plant which has no customers. but at which his wife works as a service advisor. Mr. President. the amendment we are considering today would have a devastating impact on a people who have already endured more than 40 years of unendurable suffering. It would. in effect. give President Ceausescu veto power over our decision to deny MFN status. It would not be unexpected for President Ceausescu to publicly threaten to clamp down on all emigration from Romania if MFN status is revoked. How could the President of the United States respond to such a threat? Under this amendment. he would have to make the decision to retain MFN status.
