Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000074420

Most commonlyindeed. in hundreds of thousands of casesimports are fraudulently mislabeled. Given the sheer volume of imports and the limited resources of the Customs Service. many imported textiles. apparel. and footwear simply are declared to be something which they are not. or are immensely underdisclosed in numberagain. in order to evade quotas fixed by the administration. Other fraudulent activities include fraudulent visas and export licenses. excessive undeclared weights and quantities. commercial counterfeiting. importations of items that endanger safety and health and removal of country of origin markings. Domestic textile. apparel. and footwear manufacturers and their employees pay a very heavy toll for these illegal imports. Beyond the individual injury. our national goals and policies are thwarted.
