RENAMO has proved adept at capturing weapons from FRELIMO or by simply improvising them. By all independent accounts. RENAMO lacks sophisticated weapons. uniforms. and arms for its recruits. Yet the struggle goes on. In my opinion. it was and is FRELIMOs collectivized agricultural schemes that led directly to the famine which stalks that unhappy country. FRELIMOs policies occasioned widespread famine and the flight of refugees into neighboring states. just as similar schemes had helped to create the Ethiopian catastrophe of 1985. Under Portuguese colonialism. no equivalent famine had existed. Many Mozambicans wanted to get rid of Lisbons rulethey won their independencebut not their expected freedom from fear or want.
