How do we explain to them that the handle that we have to secure their release is no longer there? Do we say. "Well. good news and bad news. The good news is that we took a stand on principle against bulldozing churches. But the bad news is that we have lost all leverage." We have lost all leverage with respect to religious persecution. as a matter of fact. and we lost all leverage with respect to the reunification of families and the emigration of Jews in Romania. It is very natural to want to make a stand on principle. We do that here all the time.
