Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000055963

Vietnamese officials agreed to set up technical meetings and begin cooperation. but no further progress has been made. Mr. Chairman. I am offering this amendment to the State Department authorization bill which expresses the sense of Congress that the Socialist Republic of Vietnam should resume the interviewing process so that those who wish to emigrate may do so in a timely manner. I believe this amendment. which is supported by the Department of State. will again confirm the longstanding commitment which the United States has for receiving Amerasian children who face severe hardships because of their American parentage. I urge my colleagues to join me in support of the amendment.
