Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000055947

I am introducing an amendment that will assist former and present Cuban political prisoners in obtaining their freedom. Due to problems encountered with the Cuban Government in 1984. the United States announced that it would not accept Cuban political prisoners. Recently. the United States began accepting political prisoners who have served 10 years or longer. My amendment ensures that all applications of Cuban political prisoners for refugee status will be processed. There has been bipartisan support for this legislation in the past. Political prisoners who fight for our democratic ideals. especially in communist Cuba. should not be ignored by our Government.
