Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000050907

Mr. Speaker. this Member hopes his colleagues in the House of Representatives will not be stampeded to amend the Immigration Reform Control Act (P.L. 99603). in a fashion similar to the action taken by the other body. As the following editorial from the Washington Post of last week indicates. the act already provides for a yearlong transition period related to provisions to halt the current practice by some businesses to hire illegal aliens. Those transition procedures and deadlines are adequate: The Congress must avoid the inappropriate chipping away of key provisions of this act. A difficult and delicate compromise was forged to pass the act.
