I offered an amendment similar to this. This amendment would direct the President. under his current authority. to add the human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] infection to the existing list of dangerous contagious diseases. Currently. aliens seeking immigrant visas are tested for dangerous contagious diseases. Also. aliens legally in the United States petitioning for permanent residence status and aliens illegally in the United States seeking legalization under the amnesty provisions of the recently passed Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 are tested for dangerous contagious diseases. My amendment would do one thing and one thing only: It would add HIV infection to the list of diseases for which these people are already tested. If the President fails to put. in final form. the human immunodeficiency virus infection on the list of dangerous contagious diseases by August 31. 1987. the moneys appropriated under this act for AIDS drugs will not be appropriated after this date.
