Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000043600

But a little over half of the doctors said an AIDS blood test should be a prerequisite for a marriage license and 28 percent said AIDS patients should be quarantined. I have not even suggested that. Now. in the distinguished Senator from Connecticuts own State in this poll. 83 percent of the respondents favored requiring AIDS testing for anyone seeking to immigrate to the United States. nearly 78 percent favored testing for couples seeking a marriage license. So. thus far. the Senator from North Carolina is doing pretty well with the American people. And I would rather do well. frankly. with the American people than with the Senate on this. because there is too much nervousness to suit me on this issue this afternoon.
