Nicaraguan refugees report that the Sandinistas use sleep deprivation. physical beatings. attacks by trained dogs. and placement in neckdeep sewage pits as methods in the program of torture they inflict on many political prisoners. One former prisoner. still in Nicaragua. has provided an excruciating account of how these methods are implemented in a clandestine facility operated by the secret police. [The prison guards] lined us up in the back of the yard right next to the swimming pool. Our hands were tied behind our backs and they would walk by and push us into the pool one by one.
