Speaker. in 1915. U.S. Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire Henry Morgenthau notified Secretary of State Lansing that the "Deportation of the excesses against peaceful Armenians is increasing and from harrowing reports of eye witnesses it appears that a campaign of race extermination is in progress under a pretext of reprisal against rebellion." In 1916. the State Department instructed the Embassy to inform the Turkish Government that the United States may make public details of the persecution of Armenians if they do not cease. In 1926. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. the founder and "Father" of modernday Turkey. stated that the Young Turk Party "should have been made to account for the lives of millions of our Christian subjects who were ruthlessly driven en masse from their homes and massacred." Today. in 1987. a very expensive lobbying effort is underway to distort a historically documented occurrence and to erase it from our collective memory.
