President. just as the Senate is on record as opposing the persecution of Jews in the Soviet bloc. so must we speak out forcefully against the persecution of Christians in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. In recent months. some grounds for mild optimism have arisen through the release of several prominent Jewish dissidents. Several weeks ago. many Members were privileged to participate in Soviet Jewry Day. Soviet authorities have claimed advances in their emigration policy. but we have yet to see such claims translated into positive action. We must not be lulled into a false sense of satisfaction on the basis of recent Soviet propaganda. Moreover. the socalled new policy of openness must not be applied only to Soviet Jews.
