Mr. President. I rise today to introduce legislation that would expedite the naturalization of JensPeter Berndt as a citizen of the United States. Peter Berndt is 23 years old and a native of East Germany. On January 7. 1985. while competing in a swimming meet in Oklahoma City as a member of the East German swim team. Peter requested and was granted political asylum in this country. Subsequently. Peter was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Patterson of Birmingham. AL. Peter is currently enrolled as a sophomore at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. He is a member of the schools swim team and is an amateur swimmer of Olympic caliber.
