Charny suffers from the deadliest type of skin cancer. malignant melanoma. for which he underwent an operation in 1979. He has also suffered from a heart attack and hormonal and kidney ailments. His cancer and heart disease interact in such a way that treating one aggravates the other. Dr. Charny and his family have been trying to emigrate since 1979. but have been denied on the basis of a security clearance that Dr. Charny held while at a job which he left 15 years ago. Interestingly. a colleague of his who worked on the same projects at the same laboratory was allowed to leave the Soviet Union in 1981.
