Speech #1000021776

President. the Soviet Union has implemented a number of reforms over the past few months. Although we have seen evidence of increased openness in Soviet society. oppression of religious groups still exists. The fate of many Jews in the Soviet Union continues to be one of suffering. persecution. and waitingan astronomical number of Jews are waiting to be given permission to emigrate to the West. Among the hundreds of thousands of refuseniks exists a group of cancer patients for whom emigration could mean the difference between life or death. Irma Meiman was one of these victims. Unfortunately. continuous delay by the Soviet government resulted in Innas death. Her husband Naum remains in the Soviet Union. The following article describes Innas strength and courage. and depicts the tragic plight of Soviet Jews who wish to emigrate. I implore the Soviet Government to grant Naum Meiman and other Soviet refuseniks permission to emigrate to the West immediately.
