Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000018335

Mr. Speaker. I would like to provide an update on Lev and Inna Elbert of Kiev and their son Carmi. In response to repeated denials of their requests for permission to emigrate to Israel. Lev and Inna began a hunger strike during the first week of this month. At that time. I sent a telegram to General Secretary Gorbachev on their behalf which was cosigned by 54 Members of Congress. Last week. I sent a followup telegram and was joined by 112 of our colleagues. To all those who supported these urgent humanitarian appeals. my sincere thanks. It is my understanding that Inna Elbert has followed her doctors urgent request to stop participating in the hunger strike to avoid serious damage to her health.
