Session #100 · 1987–89

Speech #1000017553

President Truman declared that "the valor of Greece convinces me that the Greek people are equal to the task." President Truman announced his assistance program exactly 40 years ago this month. and it is fitting that we celebrate Greek Independence Day as we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Truman Doctrine. The common bonds that have grown between the United States and Greece go beyond the shared democratic visions that we have inherited from ancient Greece. The modernday bonds are clearly apparent in the tremendous contributions that Greek immigrants have made to American societyin art. in medicine. in music. in literature. and in politics. These contributions have been essential ingredients in the melting pot that is America. So as we celebrate Greek Independence Day. we celebrate the tremendous contribution Greek Americans have made to our national life. and we celebrate the freedoms and democratic principles that are dear to all Americans.
