The concept that the power of government derives from the people and that equality exists between citizens. can be traced back to ancient Greece. In more modern times. the brave soldiers of Greece and America have fought side by side against tyranny. Furthermore. there are many successful Americans of Greek ancestry. As the Representative of the Ninth Congressional District of New York. I know first hand that many of my constituents emigrated from Greece to the United States and helped build a strong and prosperous America. Mr. Speaker. it is appropriate that we are commemorating the struggle which occurred 166 years ago when the Greek people regained their freedom.
