In addition to advancing the cause of civil rights at home. Bayard has been vigilant in supporting human rights struggles abroad. As vice chairman of the International Rescue Committee. he has become intimately involved in refugee affairs. He has traveled the world working to provide food. medical care. education and humanitarian assistance to refugees and to focus public concern on their difficult plight. In 1975. Bayard Rustin organized the Black Americans to Support Israel Committee which has pressed for the release and movement of Soviet Jews and Ethiopian Jews seeking to immigrate to Israel.
