I believe that we have an obligation to actively denounce governmentally sponsored injustice. The need to act is even more urgent today. The number of Jews allowed to leave the Soviet Union and migrate to Israel for religious freedom has reached an all time low. The Soviet administration asserts that the decline in emigration is due to a decline in the number of Jews wishing to leave. This is untrue. There are an estimated 750.000 Jews who wish to emigrate to Israel. and are currently not being permitted to do so. This refusal is in direct violation of the Helsinki Final Act. Principle VII. which the U.S.S.R. has signed.
