There is ample evidence to suggest that the Sandinistas have committed gross violations against a wide cross section of the Nicaraguan people. According to a report from the Puebla Institute. an independent Catholic laymens group. the Sandinistas engage in the practice of killing and driving out of a region all those whose farms are viewed as a potential food source for the Nicaraguan resistance. Some of the refugees interviewed identified friends and neighbors. including young children. whom they found dead from Sandinista attacks. Also destroyed by the Sandinistas were homes. schools and churches. The report also noted that Sandinista armed forces made no distinction between civilian and combatants as targets. but rather fired indiscriminatly on men. women and children.
