Indeed. several manufacturing and distribution centers have opened along the U.S. side of the border in response to the need for supplying the maquila factories with industrial parts. Finally. the maquila industry relieves the competition within our own job market. Americansponsored employment for Mexican nationals reduces the number of emigrants who would otherwise come to the United States in search of work. In addition. the close proximity of Mexico to the United States reduces the high transportation and long distance communication costs incurred by many United States producers who locate assembly plants in Far Eastern countries. We should also not forget that the maquilas make a significant contribution to a stable Mexican economy and society.
