Mr. President. on February 16. 1918. after nearly a century of czarist Russian repression. the Republic of Lithuania declared its independence. only to have it come to a tragic end in 1940 with the invasion of 300.000 Soviet troops. With the troops came Soviet puppet regimes and. finally. incorporation into the U.S.S.R. Many Lithuanians were deported to Siberia. Farmers were forcibly evicted from their land. and large numbers of people of Russian stock were settled in to strengthen their control of the area. The Lithuanian people struggled against the persecution but the Russians maintained their repressive control. Mr. President. the Soviet Union continues to forcibly occupy the proud nation of Lithuania.
