Speaker. it is a distinct privilege for me. as Congressman for the 31st District. representing western New York. to mark and recognize the 175th anniversary celebration of the towns of Hamburg. Eden. and Concord on March 20. 1987. In 1797. the Holland Land Co. bought 4 million acres of land. including what is today western New York. for $100.000. The first settlers emigrated from New England and the eastern part of New York. and later others followed from around the globe. These courageous and determined pioneers left their wellsettled towns and lifestyles to embark on this journey in the hope of finding new and greater opportunities for themselves and their families. The communities they founded are a tribute to their vision. dedication. and courage.
