New Bedford has met and survived many challengesthe decline of the whaling industry. the rise and fall of the local textile industry. the diversification of its industrial economy. and the pains of urban renewal. Today. New Bedford leads the Nationfor the fourth consecutive yearin the value of its fish landings. But it is the people of New Bedford. nourished by a rich immigrant stream continuing to this moment. who are responsible for the cultural heritage which the city enjoys today. This is a heritage in which the citys residents can take great pride. It is with the same pride that I am privileged to represent New Bedford in the U.S.
