I am pleased to be a cosponsor of House Joint Resolution 129. which would designate February 16. 1987. as "Lithuanian Independence Day." and I would like to commend my colleagues. DON RITTER. who is a member of the Helsinki Commission. and MARTY Russo for Initiating this commemorative legislation. All of us here are familiar with the events that transpired nearly 47 years ago when the Soviet Army invaded and occupied independent Lithuania. Through terror. deportations. murder. and rigged elections. Lithuania. like her Baltic neighbors Estonia and Latvia. became another captive nation of the Soviet Empire. After 20 years of political liberty and economic prosperity. a treacherous deal between Stalin and Hitler brought Lithuanian independence to an end.
