Discrimination is a national problem requiring a national solution. That was recognized by the Members of Congress who enacted the 1964 Civil Rights Act and it is worthy of our support today. I was a refugee to this country. and I am proud to say that my family came here because America is the land of equality and opportunity for all people regardless of race. religion. or sex. I feel a special obligation to vigilantly guard those values. and I have done so and will continue to do SO. We must make clear to institutions. and to the American public. that discrimination will not be tolerated or endorsed by Congress or the Federal Government.
