I rise today to introduce a joint resolution to designate April 24. 1987 as "National Day of Rememberance of the Armenian Genocide of 19151923." This resolution honors those who died during the Armenian massacre perpetrated by the Turkish Ottoman Empire. The Armenian genocide of 1915 to 1923 stands out in the tragic events of history because of its scope and brutality and as the first genocide of the century. Those 8 years saw the massacre of 11/2 million Armenian men. women. and children. and the deportation of an additional 500.000 survivors. Along with the loss of cherished loved ones. the Armenians also lost much of their historic homeland. The anguish suffered by the relatives and descendants of the victims continues.
