Benjamin Levich last week was a sad occasion for all of us involved in his great causethe cause of human rights. Benjamin Levich was a man of high intellect and unusual courage. He was renowned internationally not only as a physical chemist but also as the only member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences ever allowed to emigrate from the Soviet Union. Benjamin. his wife Tanya and their two sons. Evgeny and Alexander. endured the wrath of the Soviet authorities for many yearsbut never lost sight of their dream of "next year in Jerusalem." Shortly after he had applied for permission to emigrate in 1972. Dr. Levich lost both his positions as a professor at Moscow University and as head of the Hydrodynamics Institute. His sons were permitted to emigrate in 1975. but Dr. and Mrs. Levich were forbidden to join them. The Levich case provoked an international outcry from scientists and from the human rights community.
