Anatoly Marchenko. the meaning of that vote becomes clear. For Marchenko was a man who literally gave his life for the Soviet human rights movement. January 23 would have been Mr. Marchenkos 49th birthday. But on December 8. after 20 years in a Soviet prison camp. after suffering systematic beatings. and months of hunger strikes. he died.
