We also met with Soviet officials to get their view of the problem. The Soviet officials insisted that the problem had been resolved in the late 1970s. when virtually all Jews who wanted to leave were allowed to do so. More than 50.000 Jews left in 1979. the last year there was significant Soviet Jewish emigration. Those who were denied. we were told. were individuals who had access to classified information and could not leave under Soviet law for reasons of state. These officials insisted there no longer are significant numbers of Soviet Jews who wish to leave or who have been denied permission to do so.
