Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990284202

I think it is a sad. indeed tragic. thing when we grant amnesty to millions of people solely on the grounds that they have gotten here through an illegal act. That is the common denominator of every one of the people who get amnesty. that they came to this country illegally. I think that is in its essense unjust to the millions of people around the world who would like to live in this country. including in many cases people who are political refugees. for heavens sake. who are following the established procedure. who may have relatives in this country and who are waiting years and even decades for the opportunity to enter this country legally. Instead. in preference to them. we are granting amnesty to those who have broken the law to come here illegally. I also note in passing.
