Elie Wiesel was born on September 30. 1928 in Sighet. Romania. He was a child of 12 when Romania was first occupied by the Nazis. but his days were then still filled with study of the Talmud and his family. It was not until April 1944 that the 10.000 Jews were deported from this Romanian town. Foreign Jews had been expelled from Sighet much earlier during the war. But. when one of them returned.
