Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990274977

The perishable crop industry in this country is an industry that ranges somewhere between $35 billion to $60 billion in terms of value. It is labor intensive. That is acknowledged by all. Today the reality is that 85 percent of many of those who work in agriculture are undocumented aliens. These workers. also acknowledged. are often abused. live in fear. or exploited and have no rights. That is a bitter reality. but it is a reality. The farmers. those who try to raise the crops. are subject to random raids that disrupt their operations. It is a reality. It is a bitter reality. but it is true.
