Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990274913

I certainly respect the sincerity of the Member who is offering it and those who will support him. but I say please look at that carefully. I think you need a legalization of those folks who have been here for a long period of time. The strange thing is. most people are against illegal aliens. most people will tell you to round them all up and send them home. but those same people will say: "By the way. Congressman LUNGREN. can your immigration subcommittee pass a private bill for this person I know down the street. for the woman who works in my house. for the children who go to school with my children. for the person in the church choir that I sing with. they dont happen to have papers. Will you do something for them?" That is not schizophrenia. I think it is a recognization that most of the illegal aliens who are here are good people. They are humane people. They have come here to work. and when we know them. we in most cases like them and we will go out for them. But we know we have to do something overall about illegal immigration. Let us reform the laws. let us have this bill brought forward. let us have the connection that I think is necessary between employer sanctions and legalization. and let us get on with doing the job we have to do.
