Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990269721

Mr. President. I rise today as a cosponsor of Senate Joint Resolution 403. introduced by my distinguished colleague from Delaware which designates 1988 as the "National Year of Friendship with Finland." Finns have been a part of American society since 1638 when they first settled in a Swedish colony along the Delaware River. As a result of the influx of more Finnish immigrants. new communities were established in New York. Delaware. Pennsylvania. New Jersey. and Maryland. Their population grew in size until the Finns became the third most represented culture in the original 13 Colonies during the 17th century. Today. there are approximately 700.000 Americans of Finnish descent living in the United States.
