Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990257743

I would like to suggest that one component of the commissions study in this area be an examination of the special concerns of higher education institutions like MiamiDade Community College in Miami. FL. MiamiDade is the largest community college in the United States and has a long and distinguished record of educating students from other nations. The commission should pay special attention to the students of Nicaraguan descent who are enrolled at MiamiDade and other higher education facilities in south Florida. The administrations refusal to clarify the immigration status of these students has placed their educational future in peril. MiamiDade argues that an educated populace is a productive populace. I trust that these special concerns can be included in the commissions mandate.
