Session #99 · 1985–87

Speech #990254829

This religious revival is the surest sign of the indomitable will of the Tibetan people and of their determination to preserve their culture and way of life. Beneath the surface. however. all is not well in Tibet. Racial discrimination and the influx of Chinese colonizers are costing indigenous Tibetans their livelihood. While the recent opening of Tibet to foreigners has created employment in the construction and tourism sectors. most of the employment so generated goes to Chinese immigrants and not to Tibetans. Even the much vaunted policy of religious freedom has its limits. Most alarming. however. is the Chinese colonization of Tibet.
